Rajon Rondo: The NBA’s Least Boring Player

You need to watch more Rajon Rondo. Maybe you already watch Rondo; maybe you’ve watched him for years; maybe you’re trapped under a sheet of ice in the NHL playoffs. But something stirring is happening with the Boston Celtics point guard. Rondo, 26, has been an elite player in the NBA for a few years; he’s already won a championship ring; but lately, he’s been pushing into a level of virtuosity that’s new and rare and wildly entertaining. The triple-doubles and funny-number stat sheets are accumulating (Rondo closed the season with 24 straight games with 10 or more assists) but his quirky talent must be witnessed to be understood; there are at least four or five times in every game that he does something that no other player can do quite like him. Maybe it’s that behind-the-back pass that isn’t really a behind-the-back pass, but a fake behind-the-back pass, which freezes a defense, like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, allowing Rondo to recoil a long arm and drop an easy dish. Maybe it’s the way he plunges into heavy traffic toward the basket, full-speed, almost reckless, before emerging on the other side for a layup—a sports car zooming through a covered bridge. Rondo is one of those athletes for whom the action appears to unlock itself a beat-and-a-half faster. He can be exhilarating. Read the rest of this entry »

Warriors’ Thompson Making Run at Rookie Honors

Thompson has averaged 18.3 points per game since the trade, polishing his still in-the-works game to be more than just a pure shooter with great range. He’s shooting 44 percent from the floor and 42 percent from beyond the arc this season.

While the 6-foot-7 guard’s defense still has great strides to make, he’s putting the ball on the floor more, finishing at the rim with both hands and making opponents who run him off the 3-point line pay. Read the rest of this entry »

You Can Win Games With Danny Green

Green was never the best, nor the most important player on Roy Williams’ powerhouse teams, but he was always there. While teams were concentrated on shutting down Tyler Hansbrough’s accessto the lane, there was Danny Green; stationed in the corner waiting for a wide open three. While teams were fixated on containing Ty Lawson on the fast break, there was Danny Green; filling his lane, ready to receive and finish. And when teams rotated too quickly to stop a Wayne Ellington jumper, there was Danny Green; preparing for a swing pass and gearing up to attack the hoop. And if you thought you could score on the Tar Heels, there was Danny Green; an ACC All-Defensive Team member. Read the rest of this entry »
