Nene Hilario and Wife Lauren Team Up to Provide Healthy Food to Denver Area Children

Students at Eastridge Elementary School will receive something extra in their backpacks this year. As part of a multi-year program implemented by Blessings in a Backpack, a national child hunger relief non-profit, students at Eastridge will receive nutritious food every weekend throughout the entire school year. To celebrate the program, sponsored by Nene and Lauren Hilario, students got to hear firsthand from the NBA Star at the school visit.

The couple joined the students and administration of Eastridge Elementary during the lunch hours giving them a chance to interact socially with the children, take photos and talk with them individually and in small groups.  Nene also kicked soccer and shot some baskets with the children before returning to help stuff backpacks for the weekend program.

“Nene and Lauren and educators at Eastridge Elementary School recognized a tremendous opportunity to help needy children,” said Beth Bush, Director of Athletic Partnerships for Blessings in a Backpack.  “We are honored to be working with NeNe to get backpacks of food into the hands of the kids that need it the most and appreciate he and his families efforts in bringing attention to childhood food insecurities.  These backpacks will supplement students nutrition over the weekend, when they don’t have access to meals at school.”

“Blessings in a Backpack is a great organization and Lauren and I are proud to be partnered with them,” says Hilario. “Millions of children lack adequate food when they go home after school and on the weekends and that’s not ok. Lauren and I are happy to know that Eastridge Elementary School students will have access to nutritious food on weekends during their school year.”

“Eastridge Elementary School is extremely grateful for Nene and Lauren’s generosity in providing 200 students with food to be taken home,” says Jane Snyder, Principal at Eastridge.  “Our children can now meet the demands of learning because they do not need to fight the distraction of being hungry. Not only have the Hilario’s filled their tummies, they have allowed the students brains and bodies to learn and grow.”
