On Saturday September 24, Rajon Rondo hosted Red Bull’s second annual “King Of the Rock” tournament. The 64 man one-on-one basketball tournament, held in the infamous “The Yard” of San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island, expanded from 6 West Coast qualifiers last year to 33 internationally, with 21 from the United States. Players came from as far away as Hong Kong and Israel to scrape their hands and knees on the concrete grounds of this former island prison in front of a crowd of over 600. All the action will air on October 22nd at 10:30am PT on CBS.
This year’s champion, Hugh Jones, described the event as the best atmosphere he has ever played in. While reflecting on the intense competition, Rondo explained “that’s how people get to the pros and college, by playing one-on-one games like this and learning how to compete and getting some toughness about themselves.”
