Biography
Andris Biedrins was born April 2, 1986 in Riga, Latvia. As a 15-year old, Biedrins was a member of the Latvian National Team at the Euro Cadet Championship, where he finished 4th in scoring with 16.3 points per game and 3rd in rebounding with 8.5 per game. In 2002, Biedrins also participated in the Euro Junior Championship. Andris’ English language skills were poor when he came to the U.S., so he taught himself to speak English in six months while training in Los Angeles prior to the 2004 NBA Draft.
Andris was selected by Golden State as the 11th overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft after entering the draft as an international early entry candidate. Andris became just the second player from Latvia to ever play in the NBA, following Gundars Vetra who played for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1992-93. He was the youngest player in Warriors franchise history when he made his NBA debut as an 18-year-old on 11/5/04 vs. Utah, as well as being the youngest player in the NBA at the time. That same year he competed in the 2004 Under-18 European Championship.
Biedrins plays the center position, where he is establishing himself as one of the most promising new talents in the low post, logging impressive all around stats of 8.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Biedrins shows good touch around the basket with a .604 field goal average.
