Biography
Born Craig “Speedy” Claxton, on May 8, 1978 in Hempstead, New York, he is one of seven children. Speedy was a member of one of New York City’s best high school teams ever (playing with Lamar Odom and Erick Barkley), Claxton committed to Hofstra prior to his senior season of high school. After receiving late interest from several big-name schools, Claxton honored his commitment to attend Hofstra, where he later donated money to help build the 5,000-seat Hofstra Arena.
Claxton played four seasons at Hofstra, averaging 16.9 points, 5.5 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game in 119 contests. He ranks as the school’s all-time leader in assists and steals and is fourth in scoring. He is one of only four players in school history to reach 2,000 points, and he was selected as the America East Player of the Year after both his junior and senior seasons. Speedy also earned his degree in liberal arts from Hofstra.
He was drafted in 2000 NBA Draft, 20th overall, by the Philadelphia 76ers. After two seasons with the 76er’s, Claxton signed with the Spurs. As a member of San Antonio’s NBA Champions in 2003, Claxton appeared in all 24 playoff games with the Spurs during their run. He has since played for the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Hornets and the Atlanta Hawks. He averages 9.3 points and 4.3 assists per game.
