Biography

Francisco Elson was born February 28, 1976 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Elson is fluent in Dutch, Spanish and English and maintains an off-season home in Amsterdam. Francisco is only the seventh Dutch player to play in the NBA. Elson started playing basketball at 12 years old, but never played high school basketball; instead he played for club teams.

Francisco played two seasons at Kilgore Texas Junior College in Texas before completing his college career at the University of California. He appeared in 59 games for the Golden Bears over two seasons, starting 42 times. Elson finished his career at Cal ranked seventh all-time on the school’s blocked shots list and helped lead Cal to the NIT Championship as a senior.

Francisco was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft, but played overseas for four years. In his first NBA season, 03-04, he played in 62 games for the Denver Nuggets and continued to see significant game time with the Nuggets for the next two seasons. In 2006, Elson signed with the San Antonio Spurs where he was considered their most athletic "big man" of their centers and power forwards.
